Overview: The civilized world is coming to terms with the human and economic losses from the terrorist attacks of September 11. The insurance industry has begun asking itself some important questions: What lessons can one learn from this tragedy? Could one have been better prepared to manage the consequences of this event as they cascaded through the companies and the industry? Is there something one can do now to mitigate the effects of such events in the future and thus avoid a crisis of confidence in the industry? The paper depicts that the best answer to the three questions is by implementing Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) as a distinct competency of the industry.
