Overview: When a new processing platform dramatically increased the scope of Blue Shield of California's (BSC) Healthcare Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance efforts, the company turned to EDS to help speed development. EDS consultants with experience in both HIPAA and mainframe integration issues joined the BSC team to assist with designing, developing and testing processing instructions for several HIPAA transaction codes. EDS also helped upgrade the company's electronic-data-interchange infrastructure to ensure adequate scalability for BSC's 2.7 million customers. With development completed well in advance of federal deadlines, the company was able to achieve full compliance while improving the speed and accuracy of its claims-processing operations.
