Overview: The production, acquisition and use of energy in the United States have become frequently discussed topics with environmental, social, political and economic implications. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released the first voluntary energy-consumption standard for commercial refrigerators and freezers in 2001 under its Energy Star program.
