Overview: On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall and tore into the gulf Coast. the levees guarding New Orleans were breached and water flooded the city. Baton rouge was relatively spared the brunt of hurricane damage, but the city and LSU quickly saw their roles changed dramatically. Baton rouge, already the state capital, now became the seat of the New Orleans government. It also became a hub for federal, state, and local emergency relief efforts. LSU was in the middle of all the forces converging on Baton rouge, and O'Keefe, as its chancellor, was once again forced to put his crisis leadership skills to work.
