Overview: As financial institutions prepare their check processing operations for the impact of Check 21, the check truncation enabling legislation, their actions often are taking two general forms: equipping their check processing infrastructures with central prime pass image capture and 'Day 2' image capabilities, and preparing for image-based clearing and settlement (image exchange) of transit items. The end game of universal image exchange has set high expectations of cost savings, but many banks are overlooking fully half of their savings potential. These often-overlooked savings can be obtained by using point of presentment image workflow technology, called Straight Through Check Processing, to improve internal bank processing efficiencies.
