Overview: More than a dozen back-office applications rely on paper but, with Check 21, paper backup images may not exist. Electronifying exceptions and returns will be equally as important as issues concerning forward presentment. Cuts in back-office operations could save billions and, with fewer people, the number of lost, damaged or stolen checks would also decline. This paper points out that an image-enabled back office is essential for justifying the cost, and realizing the full benefits, of check truncation and image exchange. Image enablement of back-office functions creates significant opportunities for improved productivity and service levels.
