Overview: Early researchers accurately predicted that AIDS would have a globally destructive impact. However, other experts erroneously believed that they would be able to develop a vaccine against the virus in a relatively short period. More than twenty years later, scientists continue to work to achieve this goal. This paper addresses the unique obstacles faced by HIV vaccine researchers. It concludes with recommendations for how policymakers and public health officials could collaborate with researchers to overcome these obstacles and contribute to the discovery of an HIV vaccine that would save millions of lives.
