Overview: Customers interact with their bank at the point of sale more often than all other channels combined, whether internet, branch, ATM or call center. Since the POS is such a heavily used channel, improvements can yield significant results. This paper shows that banks which have a strong merchant acquiring presence can gain a competitive advantage across both their issuing and acquiring businesses, while banks with little or no acquiring activities will need to find ways to respond in order to avoid losing market share.
