Overview: Growing knowledge intensive firms (GKIFs) have a number of distinctive characteristics including innovative organizational forms which are seen as quite different from traditional structures. However, they have one key feature which has received relatively little attention: the dependence of some firms on a relatively small number of clients in business-to-business (B2B) relationships rather than facing a large number of retail customers. This paper seeks to understand how GKIFs make strategic choices regarding the tension between client relationships and organizational form and how this tension influences HR practices.
