Overview: The national banks are seeking permission from federal regulators to add real estate brokerage services to their inventory of financial products. This study's objective is to investigate randomly selected, hypothetical combinations of commercial banks acquiring real estate brokerages. Using a simulated Bayesian stochastic cost frontier, this study provides decision makers with estimates of X-efficiency cost reductions, cost saving synergies due to scope economies, and per unit cost reductions from scale economies from combining banking and real estate services under one management.
