Overview: Although taxpayers can interact with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) through a number of channels, due to the legal and investigative nature of some of the correspondence, many taxpayers are required to or choose to correspond with the IRS on paper. And while usage of electronic correspondence will continue to increase, the IRS will always have a significant amount of incoming paper correspondence to process. The correspondence imaging system (CIS) was born out of the idea that if the IRS could move paper faster, the skill of IRS assisters, supervisors and caseworkers would enable the IRS to resolve more cases in the same amount of time.
