Overview: Industry utilities can provide increased efficiency of operations for financial services companies, but collaboration and transparency are required to open the door. By revisiting their definition of core and noncore operations, early adopters of utility strategies are seeking to achieve step changes toward improved performance. For institutions operating in mature markets, the drive to achieve greater economies of scale may appear attainable only via mergers and acquisitions. Embarking on such a strategy may be high risk when local regulators are hostile to reducing customer choice. Consolidating noncore operations among business divisions and different industry players offers an alternative route to achieving these benefits.
