Overview: The health care industry has gone through major changes over the last few decades - some hospitals closed, many consolidated locations, and others reclassified beds resulting in a nationwide reduction in the supply of inpatient beds. The reduction has led to significant upstream challenges, including emergency department (ED) overcrowding and diversions, long patient wait times after surgery, and/or patient delays for direct admissions due to lack of bed availability. This paper explains how hospitals can handle this pressure by optimizing existing capacity by better managing patient flow.
