Overview: Where outsourcing was once focused on controlling costs, it is now being used by companies looking to gain operational flexibility, productivity improvements and improved effectiveness through improved business focus and access to worldwide capabilities. Whereas a number of other industries have taken bold steps to use outsourcing to achieve high performance, research and development leadership teams in the pharmaceutical industry have been slow to examine similar possibilities and target aggressive savings and productivity improvements through outsourcing. This article challenges the assumption that outsourcing cannot be used to address the research and development productivity gap.
