Overview: The paper informs that the start of the New Year combined with the recent proposal from the Bush administration on pension reform provides an opportune time to revisit the status of US corporate pension plans. Long-term interest rates have remained depressed a negative for these plans. However, strong asset returns, profit growth, and cash flow in 2004 all benefited these plans. A favorable macroeconomic outlook for 2005, with consensus US GDP growth around 3.5%, bodes well for pension plans. Expect to see increased discussion this year on potential changes to pension funding and accounting rules as well as the operations of the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation.
