Overview: Pay-for-performance programs generally base a portion of physician payment on quantitative measures. These may include patient care process measures, outcomes measures or patient satisfaction scores. This paper maintains that any such program must facilitate the accurate tracking and reporting of required data elements; provide for voluntary provider participation; and ensure fair and equitable implementation of program incentives.
