Overview: Hospitals, health plans, physician offices, and others that retain and access medical information were surprised when the Bush administration said in April 2001 that it would enforce a two-year limit for the industry to meet mandatory compliance requirements for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). However, as the industry works to achieve HIPAA's enforced privacy, security, and other standards, it's certain that those entities with the foresight to see the process as an opportunity rather than a sentence will ultimately realize its many benefits.
