Overview: The purpose of this document, and the conference upon which it was based, is to briefly review what is known about major issues surrounding the prevention and management of infections in long-term care facilities (LTCFs), to identify important gaps in knowledge in these areas, and to suggest questions and topics that appear to be potentially fruitful areas for research designed to improve the care of this growing and vulnerable population. The document uses the term "long-term care facility" or "LTCF" to include nursing homes, "sub-acute", "post-acute" or "transitional" care units based in community nursing homes or hospitals, and other extended care facilities.
