Overview: Almost every local authority in UK now has a website and intranet with search facilities that aim to connect enquiries to the right government information point. For online enquiries that fail to produce relevant results, the cause can often be traced back to poor quality metadata. Metadata is useful for many reasons and until recently there have been no government standards controlling the quality and application of metadata in the general sense or if it should be applied at all. As the scale of the financial burden that manual mandatory meta-tagging will place on local authorities becomes more widely known, this report expects increased take-up of effective automation technology.
