Overview: Most managers acknowledge that organization design should follow strategy and enable desired performance. Yet few have developed their own business model based on their business's fundamental strategies. In most cases, a business's model has evolved from a series of discrete decisions that have compounded over the years, resulting in a less than optimal organization. Typical Tier 1 automotive strategies exist at two levels: the business unit level and the portfolio level. The business unit strategy defines how the supplier will develop winning positions with each product or system. The portfolio strategy defines which types of products the company will offer and how the products create value together.
