Overview: UK pension schemes continue to increase their allocation to overseas assets. In doing so, they expose themselves to an additional risk factor, namely currency risk. Some of the largest schemes have implemented currency management programmes, which are used to reduce currency risks or, because the currency markets are inefficient, provide a source of extra investment return by using active currency management. Currency management is no longer a strategy to be considered by just the largest pension schemes.
