Overview: The Secure Digital Music Initiative ("SDMI") is an international forum formed in 1998 that brings together the worldwide recording, consumer electronics and information technology industries to develop open technology specifications for protected digital music distribution. The SDMI forum is simply a new industry-specific standards body which gathers participants and issues technical specifications. In other words, it is the music industry's initiative to create digital security standards for online-music delivery by establishing technology guidelines ensuring that music can be transmitted securely and to ensure inter-operability.
