Overview: Copyright forms a part of a larger body of law known as "intellectual property". Intellectual property can be thought of as creations of the human mind and intellect, and intellectual property law in general recognizes, and attempts to protect, the property rights of creators in their creations. It is widely recognized that without some sort of recognition and protection of intellectual property rights, economic systems (including international trade) would be significantly adversely affected, with the corresponding negative effects on economic growth in general.
