Overview: Copyright law goes back to the time of the U.S. constitution and it is regarded as an important cornerstone of successful intellectual property protection. However, recently it has been criticized strongly. Moreover, modern information and communication technology makes it increasingly difficult to actually protect the copyright of a digital good. Illicit copies of music files reach billions per year and there seems to be no way to stop the peer-to-peer file trading with reasonable means.
