Overview: The European music industry is facing difficult times. World sales of recorded music for 2001 fell by 8.9% in value and by 6.8% in units. Music traditionally has not attracted much attention at political level. The industry has developed along the rules of the free market economy with little or no government support. This is a remarkable when one considers the amount of government intervention in Europe in cinema, television, performing arts and book publishing in the form of subsidy mechanisms, regulatory measures (quotas) or favorable tax and pricing mechanisms. In contrast creation and distribution of music is viewed as relatively successful.
