Overview: Sustainable development (SD) is defined as "development that meets the needs of the present, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." HRDC's (Human Resources Development Canada) mandate is to assist all Canadians in their efforts to lead rewarding lives, as well as to promote a fair and safe workplace, a competitive labor market with equitable access to work, and a strong learning culture. As a result, we at HRDC are naturally concerned about social issues and believe they should be considered an important part of SD.
