Overview: The paper seeks to recognize unsung heroes who had worked at least five years on health care issues and who had received little or no national recognition for their work previously. It intends to bring to the forefront innovative solutions to problems of access to quality health care for medically underserved and low-income Americans and implicitly to place the relationship of health care needs and low-income groups into a broader context of social justice. The committee had combed through about 300 nominations for the ten awards to outstanding and innovative community health leaders.
