Overview: The article provides information about a recent survey of 100 senior executives involved in large acquisitions that closed between 1993 and 1998. The key finding from that effort is that successful post-merger integrations do not depend on speed per se. Rather, it is the way in which speed is applied-where and when-that distinguishes integration winners from losers. Post-merger integration is like middle distance running: Winners do not run as fast as possible from the starting line; instead, they envision how the race will unfold and pick their spots to accelerate.
