Overview: Focusing on the recent evolution of industry, this paper analyses how firms are redefining their strategies and building competencies to survive and compete in a context where there is a change from individual to collective efficiency. Based on a series of case studies and a survey (470 respondents), this article reached the conclusion that a clear understanding of the firm's position in the new types of organizational arrangements (alliances, chains, clusters) is crucial for strategy formulation and competence development.
