Overview: After two years of decline, entrepreneurial activity in the United States increased from 10.5 percent in 2002 to 11.9 percent in 2003. The United States exhibits the seventh highest Total Entrepreneurial Activity rate (TEA) among the 31 countries surveyed in the GEM study and the highest TEA rate among the G7 countries. Also, in 2003, 9.1 percent of Americans were starting a new business to pursue opportunities that would improve their condition, while only 1.7 percent was starting a new business due to the lack of alternative job opportunities.
