Overview: This paper presents evidence that banking deregulation led to decreases in entrepreneurship in some U.S. regions, and to increases in others. This is contrary to recent research that found an unambiguous positive relationship. This paper reexamines this finding and uses the Black-Strahan model to demonstrate that when the effects of deregulation are allowed to differ across regions, entrepreneurship is negatively associated with deregulation in some regions, and positively associated in others. This suggests a more ambiguous relationship between the real economy and the market structure of the banking sector than has been found previously in the literature.
