Overview: This paper examines recency/duration effects of layoff contact, and the order effects associated with different types of layoff contact experiences. Workers employed by a large company engaged in repeated waves of downsizing completed questionnaires in 1997, 1999, and 2003. At each time, they reported the type(s) of layoff contact they experienced in the previous two years (i.e., direct, or personally threatened with job loss, and indirect, or coworkers and work friends laid off from organization) and responded to measures of job security, intent to quit, and depression.
