Overview: This paper presents eco-efficiency trends in the Japanese automobile manufacturing industry between 1990 and 2002. The analysis is based on micro level environmental data in the annual environmental reports of automobile manufacturers. Economic output in the industry was measured by the total number of units manufactured by these companies within Japan. The results show that substantial efficiency improvements were made regarding VOC release, landfill waste and the release of PRTR-registered pollutants throughout the whole observed period.
