Overview: This paper looks at the remote sensing from satellites and how it can be used to detect oil on the oceans. The sensors used are divided into two main categories, passive and active. A radiometer is a passive instrument, thus it uses radiation from an external source. Radar is an example of an active sensor it transmits radiation and detects the echo from the target. Both are used for oil detection. The most widely used wavelength for oil spill detection is microwaves. The paper discusses the problem that oil tankers intentionally pollute the oceans and how that can be counteracted.
