Overview: This paper starts with a review of the effectiveness of provision of information via the Internet in order to estimate the extent to which a portal can contribute to better prevention care. On the basis of this review, the effectiveness and cost effectiveness of drug misuse prevention in general are discussed. It then summarizes the generally accepted criteria for effective portals on the Internet and conclude that the Mentor portal has the potential to play an important role in disseminating information on the types of prevention that are effective and how they can be implemented.
