Overview: Smart companies know that cutting manufacturing costs is not the only way to make a product cost competitive. One such company is ACI of Portland, Oregon. A simple materials handling modification allowed ACI to reduce packaging and delivery costs, amounting in a savings that ACI has passed along to its customers. At its Portland facility, ACI manufactures water-based paints that are packed and shipped via semi-truck to customers in the Western U.S. After using stainless steel drums and plastic containers, ACI wanted to reduce materials handling costs and find a container that offered more inventory turns.
