Overview: This paper described the implementation and measurement result of a novel low power adaptive FIR filter. The proposed technique can be used in the implementation of digital signal processing applications where input signals have large dynamic ranges. A reduced representation for 2's complement numbers has been proposed to achieve low power dissipation while retaining the simplicity of 2's complement arithmetic. The key idea is to generate a signal representation dynamically according to the signal magnitude. The proposed technique has been implemented in an adaptive filter chip for broadband communication applications. A power dissipation saving of approximately 32% has been measured in the test chip.
