Overview: This article presents typical features of the current development of highly specialized global gas transport that includes a variety of considerations: increasing gas volumes, new gas fields and terminals are being developed. Some of the terminals (including storage) are offshore, new trading routes, some through areas with more severe weather conditions than before, the number of liquid natural gas (LNG) carriers is projected to double to around 300 vessels before 2010, a doubling during the next six years of the existing fleet built during the last 40 years.
