Overview: This article traces the origin and explains the advantages of the use of disposable material, i.e. paper and linen cloths, for the packaging of medical items such as dressings and bandages, which is not new and probably goes back to the beginning of the 20th century. It is highly likely that the first uses of this nature occurred during World War I (1914-1918), when it was probably no more than a simple and cheap way of wrapping these items to keep them clean for use in field hospitals, etc.
