Overview: As prices go up for electricity, oil, natural gas or propane, people tighten their belts just a little bit more. In North Carolina, the cost of heating and cooling a home in recent years has risen faster than any other basic commodity. Some families are getting monthly utility bills that are higher than their mortgage payments. To be sure, they have cut their utility bills with a combination of good conservation measures and habits. However, most of their savings have come about because they have started using solar energy in their homes.
