Overview: This paper studies issues related to the increased role of foreign banks, for a large sample of emerging markets. First, it measures the extent of the increase in foreign participation in some key emerging market banking systems. Second, it presents an empirical analysis of which factors have been most important in stimulating global financial institutions to expand towards emerging markets as well as the factors that have influenced the authorities' decisions to open their domestic banking systems. A third section of the paper reviews both the theoretical arguments and the available empirical evidence about the effects of foreign bank entry on both the efficiency and stability of the domestic banking system.
