Overview: The hotel and tourism industry has been suffering particularly from the combined effects of a general economic downturn that began to show itself early in 2001 and the shock wave from the events on September 11th of the same year. The general economic downturn had already started to reduce the industry's previously strong 4½ per cent annual growth rate to well below 4 per cent. The impact of the September 11th events on tourism was dramatic.
