Overview: This paper reveals about Kori unit 3, one of the large water-cooled generators that has suffered repeated and expensive forced outages due to stator winding leaks. An inspection reveals the cause to be "wormholes" or small holes in the windings that resemble worm-eaten holes. These holes have been determined to be the result of small loose magnetic particles boring into the surface of the stator coil under the influence of the alternating magnetic field in the machine. This technical paper will be of interest to utilities that operate large water-cooled generators that are subject to aging related maintenance and degradation issues.
