Overview: This paper analyses e-government and attempts to show that it is a major paradigm shift in the way that government and public administration are to function. From this particular point of view the periods of social development are reclassified according to the type of information produced and used and the methods of information processing and dissemination. Within the final stage of configurational social information and the information society paradigm, evolving technology is viewed to affect radically public organizations not only by reengineering current processes and structures but also by inducing fundamental changes to the State's strategic role.
