Overview: The paper assesses the Nation's health by presenting trends and current information on selected determinants and measures of health status. Determinants of health considered in the paper include demographic factors, health insurance coverage, health behaviors and risk factors, and preventive health care. Measures of health status include mortality and limitations of activity due to chronic health conditions. Many measures are shown separately for persons of different ages because of the strong effect of age on health, as well as differences in causes of morbidity and mortality across the age span. Selected figures also highlight differences in determinants and measures of health status by such characteristics as sex, race, and Hispanic origin.
