Overview: STC (Sound Transmission Class) is the standard rating that describes the sound reduction of a wall or ceiling, and is universally used by architects, designers, manufacturers, contractors and distributors of acoustic building products. STC is essentially the average dB loss through a barrier across a range of frequencies. An STC rating corresponds closely to the average difference, measured in dB, produced by a sound barrier material, between the sound in one area and the sound in an adjacent area. Typical existing wall construction (the most common method is stud construction with drywall on either side) has an STC rating of 30 to 34.
