Overview: This paper presents estimates on the number and distribution of nursing home facilities, their services, current residents, and discharges in the United States. The National Nursing Home Survey is a series of nationwide sample surveys of nursing homes that have been conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). The survey collects information on nursing homes, their residents, discharges, and staff. Nursing homes are defined as facilities with three or more beds that routinely provide nursing care services.
