Overview: This paper elaborates and provides details about the resource potential and the economics of concentrating solar power as a strategic element for sustainable energy and water supply security. In 2000 the world population reached 6 billion people and the latest forecasts expect that this figure will rise to approximately 10 billion at the end of this century. These 10 billion people will most likely have a higher standard of living than today's average, with assumptions ranging from 2- to 5-fold improvement. Since the standard of living is closely linked to the energy consumption, a simple calculation shows the dramatic challenges facing the worldwide energy sector in the coming 100 years.
