Overview: This paper is based on traces and the development of sailplanes from the early roots in the 1920s and 30s, through the revolution of composite structures in the 1950s, to the superships of 2000 which are capable of lift to drag ratios of 70. The engineering behind this evolution in performance is described and a look into the enabling technologies of the future is attempted.
