Overview: In the 1970s, use of mobile radio frequencies was expanding dramatically and existing antennas were becoming heavily overloaded. The engineering solution was to introduce multiple transmitter combiners onto a single antenna using band-pass filters. The use of a beer barrel in this context shows how existing structures can be adapted to new uses at a fraction of the cost of purposely designed components. The main use of the beer barrel has been at VHF and a very good example of a large commercial installation.
